In the 4th century there had briefly been a Roman signal station on Scarborough headland and there is evidence of much earlier Stone Age and Bronze Age settlements. They would build a third rail on the northernmost track on the Grand Trunk Railway mainline until Scarborough, where the line would curve north on its own right-of-way. The section from Seamer to Scarborough forms the last part of the coastal line from Hull, with the branch connecting at Seamer junction.
